This week is Loneliness Awareness Week, which runs from 17th June – 21st of June. Here at Premier Community we think it’s important to raise awareness and change the way we think about loneliness. We need to talk about it.
The facts on loneliness
- A study by The Co-op and the British Red Cross reveals over 9 million people in the UK across all adult ages – more than the population of London – are either always or often lonely.
- The number of over-50s experiencing loneliness will reach 2 million by 2025. This compares to 1.4 million in 2017 – that’s a 49% increase in 10 years
- There are 1.2 million chronically lonely older people in the UK
- Half a million older people go at least five or six days a week without seeing or speaking to anyone at all
- There are 2.2 million people aged 75 and over living alone (that’s over half – 51%), that’s an increase of 24% over the past 20 years.
- 3.9 million older people say the television is their main company
What are we going to do?
It’s important that we can openly talk about feeling lonely and recognise it’s something that affects all of us. One of the first steps to achieving this is to reduce the stigma around loneliness.
We know that for some people, our care staff are the only people they see that day. This week we’ll be posting tips and advice all week on what you can do to help an older person who is dealing with feeling lonely.
