Here at Premier Community we are proud to get involved with our local community, providing support and sponsorship to good causes where we can. One of the fantastic causes we support is a local inclusive football team, Sherwood Colliery Ability Counts FC.
Established in 2010, Sherwood Colliery Ability Counts FC are based at Debdable Park Sports and Recreational Club in Mansfield Woodhouse. Providing people living with disabilities, learning difficulties or mental health the opportunity to play football in a safe environment.
This year has been fantastic for the club, achieving recognition for their hard work and talent.
Their White team made it all the way to the final of the FA peoples Cup. The journey began in Nottingham, with wins over Riverside, Sherwood Red and a draw against Derby County. This was enough to send them to the semi-finals in Birmingham.
The team reached Birmingham in high spirits, which showed in their on-pitch performance. A draw against a very good Wet Bromich Albion team was the outcome, followed by a 5-0 win over Sutton Special Olympics and a very hard fought 1-0 win against Oadby and Wigston – this resulted in a final game against Oadby and Wigston to see who would make the final at Stt Georges Park, Burton. The White team prevailed with a 4-0 win over a tiring Oadby side.
St Georges Park saw some incredibly close games. Draws against Luton and South Tyneside, a win against Dexter Sports and a loss to Manchester Utd were enough to reach the semi-final on the day against Luton Town. It was a good game by both teams. With Sherwood just scraping a 1-0 victory to make the final.
The White team finished runners up from over 4000 teams across the country and the final was televised on the BBC red button.
Not just for the boys
This season, the ladies team have been in blistering form, picking up the Inclusion Cup in September. In October the team have had some notable wins against both Leicester City and Aylestone.
The club has also recently set up a disability Junior Team which has gained 14 players in a short turnaround time, they have entered the Want to Play League, Nottingham where they have settled really quickly.
Last month the club obtained the FA Grassroots Club of the Year, with Manager/Owner Vernon Thompson receiving an award for outstanding contribution to disability football.
