Keep in touch with your friends and family members 

One of the most effective ways to combat loneliness as you get older is to keep in touch with friends and family members. With technology being prevalent in everyday life, it’s never been easier to stay in touch with your loved ones. A quick phone call can make a huge difference, or why not book in a regular facetime or zoom call each week which you can look forward to? It’s always nice to meet for a tea or coffee or to go out for a meal as this will get you out of your house too. If you don’t have friends and family nearby that can come and visit, consider companionship care. This is where someone can come and spend time with you at your home or head out with you.

Continue being active 

No matter your age, being active is important for both your physical and mental health. As you get older, being active can work at preventing illness, improving cognitive function, decreasing the risk of falling and combating loneliness. Uncomplicated activities like going on a walk or a light gym workout can benefit you, or if you enjoy sports, you could start playing golf, swimming or yoga. These aren’t too exhilarating on your body and will keep your body fit as well as providing the ideal way to meet others, allowing you to stay social. 

Volunteer in your community

Volunteering is a great way to help others while sharing the knowledge and experience that you’ve gained throughout your life. There are many ways in which you can volunteer, from helping your local charity shop to working in a hospital or supporting your local school. You’ll continue to learn new skills, feel more confident and it will help you feel less lonely. Consider adopting a pet 

Pets are great at keeping you company, especially when your family members or friends are busy. A dog will force you to go on walks outside which can be very beneficial, while a cat will make your house feel less empty. Animals help give you a sense of purpose as you have the responsibility to look after them as well as yourself. They encourage you to exercise, provide companionship, reduce stress and help you meet new people when taking them out for a walk. 

Explore your hobbies 

The hobbies you take part in is down to you, but it’s important to continue enjoying them. By continuing to take part in your hobbies, you’ll be able to meet new people, socialise with others and it’s something for you to look forward to doing. Try to join a club and attend once or twice a week or look to visit events or social groups that are aimed at your age group. Why not try something new and challenge yourself? Offering the chance to enjoy the outdoors, create a beautiful looking garden and combat loneliness, gardening is the perfect activity to get you out of your slump. Why not attempt to grow your own flowers and vegetables and then invite your loved ones over for dinner that you’ve cooked with these? It’s the perfect activity to give you some gentle exercise and if anything is too strenuous, you can always ask someone for help. If you don’t have a garden you could apply for a gardening group or apply for your own allotment.

Open up to people 

If you are suffering, try not to suffer in silence. Instead, reach out to people and tell them how you are feeling, it could be that they were not aware of your situation. You can speak to your friends or family members, or if you feel like you don’t have someone close, there are plenty of charities that can support you. It may sound scary, but try talking to a stranger when you are at a cafe or in the supermarket. You’ll be amazed at how kind human beings can be and the difference just reaching out can do. 

Plan your diary 

It can be helpful to plan things in advance and write them in a calendar. This way you have things to look forward to and are able to see the days you are free and reach out to people to fill them. No matter how big or small the activity is, add it to your calendar as this can make a big difference to your day. Whether you are going for a walk around your local park, a coffee with a friend or arranging a big day out to the city, visually seeing them can help combat loneliness as you get older.
