How to choose the right mobility scooter

The best scooter depends on where you’ll use it, how far you need to go, and whether it needs to fit in a car. Here’s a quick guide to the main types we sell.

Boot & travel scooters

Compact scooters that split into a few light sections to lift into a car boot. Ideal for shopping trips, holidays and days out. Range is usually 8–15 miles.

Pavement scooters (Class 2, 4mph)

A step up in comfort, with bigger wheels, better suspension and a longer range. Used on pavements, and you don’t need to register them.

Road scooters (Class 3, 8mph)

Built for longer journeys, with lights, indicators and mirrors. They can go up to 8mph on the road, are limited to 4mph on pavements, and must be registered with the DVLA.

Approved Used mobility scooters

Our Approved Used scooters are inspected and serviced by our own engineers before sale, and many come with new batteries. You get a reliable scooter at a lower price, with the same local support as a new one.

Try before you buy at a local mobility shop

Visit one of our mobility shops in Swadlincote, Carlton (Nottingham), King’s Mill Hospital (Mansfield), Ilkeston and Woodseats (Sheffield) to sit on different models, test drive them and get honest advice from our team. Our in-house engineers can also service and repair your scooter after you buy.

Mobility Scooters FAQs

Do I need a licence to drive a mobility scooter?

No. You don’t need a driving licence for either Class 2 or Class 3 scooters. Class 3 (8mph) scooters must be registered with the DVLA, and you must be 14 or over to drive one.

Do I need insurance for a mobility scooter?

It isn’t a legal requirement, but we strongly recommend it. Every scooter we sell includes 1 month’s free insurance, and you can upgrade to longer cover with breakdown recovery.

Will a scooter fit in my car?

Most boot and folding scooters do. Tell us your car model and we’ll check which scooters fit, or bring it to one of our shops to try.

What weight limit do I need?

Choose a scooter rated comfortably above your weight. Our range runs from around 17 stone to 31 stone, and each product shows its maximum user weight.
