Know Your Numbers Week runs from 8th to 14th September, and various events are taking place across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, offering free checks in a town or village near you.
High blood pressure doesn’t have any obvious symptoms but is a major cause of heart attacks and strokes, which can lead to a number of serious long-term health conditions, such as cardiovascular disease and kidney disease.
So what do the numbers in your blood pressure reading mean?
When your blood pressure is measured, you will be given two numbers, a top and a bottom number.
The top number is your Systolic reading, which is the highest level your pressure reaches when your heart beats, forcing blood around your body.
The bottom number is known as your Diastolic reading. This measures the pressure of your blood as the heart relaxes between beats.
According to Blood Pressure UK: “Ideally, we should all have a reading between 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg.
“Most people in the UK have blood pressures higher than the ideal, but below the usual cut-off for diagnosing high blood pressure – somewhere between 120/80mmHg and 140/90mmHg. If you’re in this range, you could develop high blood pressure in the future. Taking steps to lower your blood pressure will keep your risk of health problems down.”
