A Father’s Footsteps: Lacey’s Story of Care, Courage, and Devotion

Celebrating a special story of love and inspiration.

At Premier Community, we believe that the heart of care often begins at home, we’re proud to share the deeply moving story of Lacey, a dedicated member of our care team, and the extraordinary bond she shares with her father, Paddy, and her son, Spencer.

For the third year in a row, Paddy will be walking from Shirebrook to Skegness, a three-day challenge that raises vital funds for Manchester Children’s Hospital, where Spencer receives specialist treatment. His reason is simple and profound: love for his grandson, deep gratitude for the NHS, and a lifetime of putting others before himself.

But at the heart of this story is Lacey – a mother, a carer, and soon-to-be nurse-in-training – whose own compassion has been shaped by the resilience of her family and the unwavering love they share.

A Caring Heart Forged in Challenge

Lacey’s journey into care hasn’t just been a career choice — it’s been a calling. Her son Spencer lives with MPS6, a rare and progressive condition affecting almost every part of his body. Despite his complex medical needs, Spencer is full of life, laughter and strength. He’s had numerous surgeries, attends frequent hospital appointments, and receives ongoing treatment, but through it all, he remains an inspiration to those around him.

Caring for Spencer has taught Lacey more about strength, patience, and hope than any textbook ever could. And when things were hardest, it was her father Paddy who stood beside them — not just in support, but in action.

Back in 2015 and 2016, Lacey and her family faced a year filled with immense health challenges involving her son, brother, and dad. Those experiences, though traumatic, were defining — strengthening her gratitude for the NHS and fuelling a powerful desire to give back.

This year, Lacey is taking her next step: starting university in September to train as a nurse. It’s a decision born from love, lived experience, and the quiet determination to help others the way her own family has been helped.

Paddy’s Walk: A Father’s Devotion

Each August Bank Holiday, a group from Shirebrook sets off on a now well-loved tradition: a journey on foot or by bike to Skegness, raising funds for causes close to their hearts. For Paddy, it’s a personal mission — to support the hospital that has given so much to his grandson and to honour the NHS that cared for his family in their darkest moments.

Over two years, Paddy has raised nearly £10,000, with each step of the walk echoing his enduring love for Spencer. His determination and selflessness have left a lasting impression — not just on those who donate, but most powerfully, on his daughter.

Walking in His Footsteps

Lacey describes her dad as her rock and her son’s best friend. Their connection is deeply emotional, built on kindness, strength, and unshakable love. Watching her father walk mile after mile for Spencer hasn’t just inspired admiration — it’s sparked a new purpose in her life.

As she prepares to begin her nursing studies, Lacey carries with her the lessons learned through caring: that true compassion is quiet, persistent, and often begins close to home. Her journey is one of transformation — from family caregiver to professional carer — shaped by the example of a father who walks, quite literally, in love.

Paddy’s journey from Shirebrook to Skegness may be measured in miles, but its impact reaches far beyond. It’s a story of care that moves across generations — and into the very soul of our community.

We’re proud to share Lacey’s story — a reminder that behind every act of care is a person with heart, history, and a reason to keep going.
