Act 11 of 30: Premier Community Volunteers Transform Overgrown Garden in Hucknall

Sometimes, caring for someone means noticing the things that sit beyond the care plan. 

As part of Premier Community’s 30 for 30 campaign, a team of volunteers spent the day transforming an overgrown garden in Hucknall after our Care Assistants became concerned about access to a Service User’s home. 

The garden had become increasingly difficult for the Service User to maintain themselves, and over time the pathway to the property had become heavily overgrown. 

For our Care Assistants visiting the home, getting through the front garden was becoming something of an expedition. 

But this was about much more than making the garden look tidy. 

A growing concern for safety 

As the garden became more overgrown, access to the property was becoming increasingly restricted. 

Windows were obscured, pathways were disappearing beneath the greenery and reaching the front door was becoming more difficult. 

For our home care team, this raised a much bigger concern: what would happen in an emergency? 

If the Service User needed urgent medical assistance, or there was a fire or another situation where somebody needed to get in or out of the property quickly, restricted access could become a serious problem. 

Our team had spotted something that could make a real difference to the safety and wellbeing of the person we support. 

So, we decided to do something about it. 

Premier Community volunteers get stuck in 

Armed with strimmers, garden tools and plenty of determination, a team of Premier Community volunteers headed to Hucknall to tackle the garden. 

And there was certainly plenty to tackle! 

The team spent the entire day cutting back vegetation, clearing pathways, removing overgrowth and gradually revealing the home beneath it all. 

To make things slightly more challenging, they did it on one of the hottest days of the summer. ☀️🌿 

But slowly, the transformation began to appear. 

Windows that had been hidden behind greenery were uncovered. The pathway became a pathway again. The front door was easily accessible. 

And by the end of the day, the garden had been taken right back to basics, leaving the Service User with a safer, clearer and much more manageable space around their home. 

Most importantly, there was a big smile on their face. That made every minute in the heat worthwhile. 

More than a garden makeover 

Premier Community’s Care Assistants support people to live independently in their own homes, and sometimes that means noticing challenges that go beyond the care we are there to provide. 

This garden makeover wasn’t about creating the perfect outdoor space. 

It was about improving access, reducing a potential safety concern and helping someone with something they simply weren’t able to tackle alone. 

For our volunteers, it was also one of those wonderfully straightforward acts of community kindness. 

There was a problem. 

We had people willing to help. 

So we rolled up our sleeves and got stuck in. 

30 acts of kindness for 30 years of Premier Community 

Throughout 2026, Premier Community is celebrating 30 years of supporting people and communities across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire with our 30 for 30 campaign. 

We’re completing 30 acts of community kindness to celebrate the people, places and communities that have been part of our story. 

For this act, one very hot day, a few strimmers and a team of willing hands helped make one person’s home in Hucknall safer and their situation a little easier. 

And that is exactly what 30 for 30 is all about. 💙
