Act 23 of 30: Laura’s 50 Mile Walk for MND

Act 23 of 30: Laura's 50 Mile Walk for MND

For Act 23 of our 30 for 30 campaign, we’re proud to sponsor one of our own. Laura, our Care Co-ordinator in Amber Valley at Premier Community, is taking on a 50 mile walk for MND throughout October. She’ll walk with her dogs and her son Oliver to raise money for the MND Association.

Laura spends her working life helping people in our community live well at home. This October, she’s going the extra mile for them, fifty times over.

Why Laura is walking 50 miles for MND

On 3rd May 2025, Laura’s family lost Chris, Oliver’s great-uncle, to motor neurone disease. He was just 58.

Laura says Chris was “the life and soul of the party”. He always had a hilarious story, a terrible dad joke and a smile ready. He adored Oliver from the day he was born. When Oliver was about six, Chris took him on his very first fishing trip. It’s also where Oliver learned his first swear word, when Chris got a fishing hook stuck in his finger.

Oliver is 17, so he’s too young to sign up with the MND Association himself. He’ll be walking every mile alongside his mum anyway.

Walking for others living with MND

Laura’s walk is in Chris’s memory, but it isn’t only for him. She’s walking for the families who are living with MND right now, and for those who will be diagnosed next.

At Premier Community, our teams support people with conditions that affect their mobility, independence and ability to communicate. Laura sees every day how much the right care, equipment and support can mean. MND can take those abilities away faster than almost any other condition. That’s why she wants to make sure more people get help when they need it.

What is motor neurone disease?

Motor neurone disease (MND) affects the nerves that control movement. According to the MND Association, six people in the UK are diagnosed with MND every day. The disease can progress quickly. Within months, people may lose the ability to walk, talk, eat or even breathe unaided.

The MND Association supports people living with MND and their families. It also funds research and campaigns for better care.

How your donation helps

Every donation to Laura’s MND Association fundraiser makes a difference. Just £20 could buy an LCD writing tablet, which helps someone keep communicating after MND has taken their voice.

Supporting our own Premier Community family

Our 30 for 30 campaign celebrates the people and causes in our communities. Some of the most meaningful stories start within our own team, like Donald’s Great North Run for Harry’s HAT.

Laura cares for others at work every day. Now it’s our turn to get behind her.
