A Trip to the Cinema: Supporting Rob to Enjoy the Things He Chooses
A trip to the cinema might be an everyday activity for many of us. But good care is about making sure everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the things that interest them, in a way that feels comfortable and right for them.
During a recent care visit, Rob was happy to head out into the community with his carer for a trip to the cinema to see the new Spider-Man film.
With tickets sorted and the big screen waiting, Rob enjoyed the experience and stopped for a photo alongside the film poster to remember the day.
Making Choice Part of Great Care
At Premier Community, we believe the people we support should have genuine choice over how they spend their time.
Rob can sometimes find accessing the community challenging. That doesn’t mean deciding for him what he can or can’t do. Instead, our role is to provide the right support and encouragement so that when Rob chooses to go somewhere, he has the opportunity to do it.
On this occasion, that meant a trip to the cinema.
Person-centred care starts with listening to the individual. Their interests, preferences and decisions should shape the support they receive, whether that’s choosing what to have for lunch, visiting somewhere they enjoy or catching the latest film at the cinema.
Inclusive Care Is About Opportunity
Supporting people to access their local community is an important part of promoting independence, inclusion and wellbeing.
Our carers can support people with activities outside the home, including shopping, appointments, hobbies, social activities and days out. What that looks like will always depend on the individual.
For Rob, the cinema provided an opportunity to get out, enjoy something he was interested in and spend time in the community on his terms.
And ultimately, that’s what matters.
Not every achievement needs to be enormous. Sometimes it’s simply being able to say, “I’d like to do that today,” and having the right people around you to help make it happen.
We hope you enjoyed the film, Rob! ๐ฟ๐ท๏ธ
