Care Story

One Trip, One Bench, One Big Achievement: Kath’s Journey Back into the Community

One Trip, One Bench, One Big Achievement: Kath's Journey Back into the Community

For many of us, popping to the supermarket or enjoying a walk in the park is something we barely think about.

For Kath, it was a huge achievement.

Kath has been finding it difficult to leave the house, with anxiety making everyday outings feel overwhelming. But with gentle encouragement and support from her Premier Community carer, she decided to take that first step.

Together, they headed to Lidl, where Kath did something she hadn’t felt able to do for some time. She chose her own shopping, paid for her items herself, and even treated herself to a fresh pastry and doughnut.

The outing didn’t end there.

Afterwards, Kath enjoyed a gentle stroll around the local park before sitting on a bench to soak up the sunshine, taking a moment to enjoy being outdoors again.

Confidence Starts with One Step

At Premier Community, we know that maintaining independence isn’t always about the big milestones.

Sometimes it’s about helping someone find the confidence to walk through their own front door.

Person-centred home care is about understanding each person’s goals, however big or small they may seem. Whether that’s visiting the shops, enjoying a favourite café, attending appointments, or simply getting outside, every achievement deserves to be celebrated.

The Benefits of Companion Care

Supporting people back into their community can have a lasting impact on both physical and emotional wellbeing.

Companion care can help people to:

💙 Build confidence after periods of isolation

💙 Reduce feelings of anxiety and loneliness

💙 Maintain independence with everyday tasks

💙 Stay connected with local communities

💙 Improve mental wellbeing through social interaction

💙 Continue enjoying life’s simple pleasures

These moments aren’t just outings. They’re opportunities to rediscover confidence and independence.

More Than a Shopping Trip

Kath’s visit to Lidl wasn’t measured by what she bought.

It was measured by what she achieved.

Choosing her own shopping, paying at the checkout, enjoying time outdoors, and taking in the sunshine were all important reminders that with the right encouragement, small steps can lead to meaningful progress.

At Premier Community, we’re proud to support people to overcome barriers, build confidence, and continue living life on their own terms.

Because sometimes the biggest victories begin with simply saying, “Let’s give it a go.”
