The summer months are a great opportunity to embrace the outdoors and enjoy the benefits of sunshine by engaging in activities. While the sun is here, it’s best to take advantage of the warmer weather and explore a variety of summer activities that are suitable for your needs. Below are some activities in the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire area, perfect to get you out and about these upcoming months.
Derbyshire Activities for Seniors:
The Oddfellows host several coffee mornings throughout the district, including ones held outside in the garden, offering the perfect opportunity to soak up some sun and socialise. The coffee mornings consists of food, drink and games.
The garden events take place at Derbyshire Peak District Lodge, 126 Saltergate, Chesterfield, S40 1NG. Please call 01246 273076 to book and for further information. The Oddfellows offer lots of other events to attend this summer, such as Friday Night Social, flower arranging and lots of online sessions you can participate in as well.
If you are around the Chesterfield area, Inclusive Pedals deliver community-based activities for seniors and those with limited mobility such as adapted cycling, Cycling Without Age and the Community Cycle Club. Their sessions usually last for one or two hours and are led by one of their staff members.
Their popular free ‘taster’ sessions happen in Queens’s Park on the first Friday of the month, 1:00 pm- 3:00 pm April to October. So, pay them a visit and try out a free taster session; please keep in mind carers are expected to accompany the trainee!
The Oddfellows also offer a Games Afternoon event hosted by the Erewash Valley District Branch on Friday, 28th June, at 1:00 pm. Why don’t you pay them a visit to enjoy an afternoon in great company with lots of games such as Rummikub.
Free tea, coffee and a biscuit are on offer too! This fun-packed afternoon takes place at Awsworth Village Hall, NG16 2QQ. For further information, please call Mrs Melanie Archer on 0115 646498.
Nottinghamshire Activities for Seniors:
In the Nottinghamshire area, you could get creative this summer and visit ArtSpeak Art Club. With the opportunity to try something new every week, there will be something to suit all interests and abilities. This is a welcoming, encouraging and social space for you to be curious and experimental, whilst enjoying a tea and a chat.
These sessions are perfect for those inevitable rainy days summer will bring, as you can still get out of the house, but will be dry and occupied. The sessions take place on the first and third Wednesday of the month from 15:00 pm- 17:00 pm, at 25 Prospect Street. Please call 0115 978 6133 to book your session.
If you are in or around the Mansfield area, why not visit Oak Tree Leisure Centre and have a game of walking football?
These sessions take place every Wednesday at 10:30 am- 11:30 am. These sessions are perfect activities for seniors to still engage in physical activity and enjoy the outdoors but with lesser impact and and a slower pace that suits them.
The game still requires the vision, skill and concentration levels of standard football, but if you want to keep your body moving, this is the perfect opportunity for you! You can book by calling reception on 0345 0000 231.
Age UK offers free guided health walks around various areas in Nottinghamshire. Why not stay active, make new friends, and join one of their guided well-being walks?
The Best Foot Forward walks are led by trained walk leaders; walks are free, and everyone is welcome. However, people under the age of 18 are asked to be accompanied by an adult. Age UK also runs Gentle Walk & Talks, which are slower-paced and aimed at people who want to become more mobile but may struggle with long-term health conditions, and who would like to meet new friends.

These are just a few suggestions for getting outside and enjoying the sun this summer to keep yourself and your mind busy. If none of the above interests you, it is still extremely beneficial for your mental health to expose yourself to some sunlight, as it has a positive impact on your well-being.
